Received an Income Tax Notice? Verify It Before Responding

A useful reminder for taxpayers is to verify the authenticity of any Income Tax notice before clicking links, sharing information or making payments.

The Income Tax Department provides an official “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD” facility on its e-Filing portal. Importantly, this is available as a pre-login service to both registered and unregistered users.

Taxpayers can authenticate a notice using either:

  • PAN, document type, year, issue date and mobile number; or
  • Document Identification Number (DIN) and mobile number.

If the communication is genuine, the portal confirms that the notice/order/letter was issued by the Income Tax Authority. If no matching document exists, the portal displays “No record found.”

Who should act: Anyone receiving an unexpected tax notice, demand, summons or letter.

Action: Verify first and respond only through official Income Tax channels.
