A timely reminder for taxpayers is the approaching income-tax return deadline.
The Income Tax Department states that August 31, 2026 is the due date for filing returns for applicable non-audit taxpayers for AY 2026-27. The department also specifically confirms this deadline for eligible ITR-4 filers.
Taxpayers who miss the applicable deadline can still file a belated return, but may face a late filing fee of up to ?5,000, along with interest where tax remains payable.
Who is affected: Salaried individuals and other taxpayers whose applicable return-filing due date is August 31.
Action: Reconcile Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS, bank interest, capital gains and TDS credits before submitting the return.
Do not wait until the final day, when portal traffic or missing information could delay filing.
